Packaging machines play a huge role in the food industry and the importance of high-quality packing equipment to businesses selling foodstuffs simply cannot be overstated, regardless of whether the company in question is a small high street butcher or a huge multinational corporation. Food packaging machines do so much more than simply encase snacks and ready meals in plastic; they are the catalysts for convenience and growth of the food industry as a whole.
Types of food packaging
There are countless different types of food packaging machines that can handle a number of different tasks. However, there are two specific ‘categories' that all will fall under: primary packaging and secondary packaging. Let's take a look at these two different types of food packing equipment a little closer:
Primary packaging
Primary packaging is generally considered to be the food packing material that comes into direct contact with the product. So, for example, a ready meal tray and its sealing sleeve would both be regarded as primary packaging, as would a soft drink bottle and its cap.
Secondary packaging
As you may have already guessed, secondary packaging is the packing material that encases the primary packaging. This can vary greatly, and there can even be multiple layers of secondary packaging used on one individual product.
For example, the soft drinks bottle may have a plastic wrap surrounding it to allow for transportation, but it may also have a cardboard base as well. Both of these packing materials would be regarded as secondary packaging.
